Back in August, Google Ads quietly sent Australian advertisers a brief notice. Plenty of recipients gave it a glance and moved on. Its point was blunt: certain Search campaigns are about to be altered, and your approval isn't required.
Google Ads AI Max has arrived in Australian accounts. Once active, it can stretch the range of queries that trigger your ads, generate fresh headline wording and choose which page a visitor lands on. A builder in Joondalup or a café group in Fremantle might pick up extra customers from that. Equally, they might end up funding clicks nobody asked for.
Below, we break down what's shifting, what's staying put and the checks worth doing before the week is out.

Understanding Google Ads AI Max in plain English
Think of it as an add-on layer rather than a fresh campaign type. AI Max bundles several AI-driven tools into an ordinary Search campaign, and Google's own update states the product came out of beta in April 2026. It has three moving parts:
- Search term matching: lets Google serve your ads against queries it judges to share your intent, reaching past the keywords you listed.
- Text customisation: drafts additional headlines and descriptions using your site content and existing ads. It replaces what used to be called automatically created assets.
- Final URL expansion: routes each person to whichever page of your site Google predicts will suit them.
Worth knowing: any Search campaign you create from scratch now has AI Max enabled unless you turn it off.
The September 2026 changes, and what stays the same
Deadline 1: September 2026. This one is already under way. It covers campaigns relying on automatically created assets or broad match set at campaign level:
- If you use automatically created assets, you receive both search term matching and text customisation.
- If you use a campaign-level broad match, you receive search term matching alone.
Deadline 2: February 2027. To keep the busy Q4 period stable, Google has postponed the Dynamic Search Ads upgrade, a change covered by Search Engine Land. New DSA campaigns can still be created up to January 2027. From then on, remaining campaigns are converted with all three AI Max features active from day one.
Anyone who saw the word "postponed" and stopped paying attention should know that two of the three triggers are live today.
Comparing AI Max, DSA and Performance Max
| Dynamic Search Ads | AI Max for Search | Performance Max | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Placement | Search only | Search only | Every Google channel |
| Query matching | Content on your site | Your keywords, widened by intent | Audience signals plus assets |
| Ad text | Taken from your pages | Generated from site and ad content | Assembled from your assets |
| Landing page choice | Selected from your site | Final URL expansion | URL expansion |
| Search term visibility | Yes | Yes | Partial |
Bottom line: because AI Max never leaves Search, the actual queries people typed remain visible to you.
The cost of ignoring the switch
Google Ads automation is only as good as the data it's fed. The switch won't tidy your account for you; it simply amplifies whatever setup you already have.
- Existing holes carry over. Missing brand exclusions or absent negative keyword lists come along for the ride.
- Enquiry quality may drop without warning. Looser matching tends to lift lead numbers while lowering their value.
- Tight budgets take the hit first. The system trains itself on conversions, so with limited spend, the learning period can swallow a large slice of each month.
- Regulated sectors carry more exposure. Australian Consumer Law holds you responsible for every claim in your ads, whether a person or a machine drafted it.
Let's put numbers on it. Imagine a monthly budget of $3,000 and an average click cost of $6. That works out to roughly 115 clicks each week. Should 20% of them come from irrelevant searches, around $140 disappears weekly, or about $1,800 across three months.
AI Max Australia in the west: extra care for WA advertisers
The bulk of guidance out there targets the east coast or the American market. Western Australia plays by different rules.
- Distances are enormous. A plumber servicing metro Perth probably has no use for leads from Geraldton or Bunbury. Review the "locations of interest" setting, since it can show ads to people who mention a town in their query.
- Fly-in fly-out searches come from remote sites. A worker in the Pilbara might look up a Perth business. Work out whether those clicks earn their keep.
- Your clock setting matters. Ad schedules run on the time zone set in your account. Left on Sydney time, your WA ads will appear at the wrong times of day.
Your pre-switch account checklist
- Work out which date affects you. Google Ads AI Max reaches accounts in two waves. Campaigns with auto-created assets or campaign-level broad match fall in September; DSA campaigns fall in February 2027. Plenty of accounts sit in both groups.
- Tidy up conversion tracking. Record genuine enquiries and sales only, never page views. Smart Bidding drives these features using conversion data, so inaccurate tracking leads to poor decisions.
- Go through the last 90 days of search terms. Build negatives from what you find. Typical candidates in Australia are "TAFE", "apprenticeship", "salary", "DIY", "Bunnings", "Gumtree" and the names of states you don't serve.
- Lock down your brand settings. Apply brand exclusions so your ads avoid competitors' branded queries.
- Review what your website says. Because text customisation draws on your pages, outdated or thin content turns into outdated or thin ads. Well-written website copy plus landing pages built around ad intent hand the system stronger raw material.
- Look at URL rules and pinned assets. Block pages that should never attract paid visitors, such as job listings or expired offers, and make sure your pinned headlines are still appearing.
- Set text guidelines. Rule out risky claims like "guaranteed", "cheapest" or "same-day" unless you can genuinely back them up.
Staying in charge (or switching it off)
Haven't switched yet? Open each campaign's settings, clear the text customisation box and disable campaign-level broad match.
Beware the banner. Clicking the "upgrade to AI Max" prompt turns the feature on; it won't take you out.
Already switched over? Head to the AI Max section of the campaign settings to disable it, which turns off every feature at once.
Opting out delays the change; it doesn't replace a plan. DSA campaigns will still migrate in February.
Early adopter, wait-and-see or opt-out?
AI Max tends to perform best for accounts that convert consistently and sites with plenty of well-built, specific pages. Tight budgets, sparse websites and heavy compliance requirements make it a riskier bet.
Whichever way you learn, sort out the fundamentals first, then run a split test over four to six weeks. Measure success by cost per acquired customer rather than cost per lead alone.
When lead costs drop while customer costs climb, the system is chasing cheaper, lower-quality enquiries. That won't show up inside Google Ads, but your CRM will reveal it.
Agencies are welcome to outsource all of this to us. Our white-label Google Ads management handles audits, configuration and testing, while our client reporting dashboards make it easy to see what shifted once the switch happened.
Our verdict
Google Ads AI Max won't wreck your account, and it won't hand you results for free either. It's a strong tool that performs best inside firm boundaries.
Get your tracking accurate, your negatives thorough, your brand and location settings tight, and your landing pages worth visiting. Once that groundwork is done, Google Ads automation starts working in your favour instead of against you.
Most advertisers in Australia still haven't looked at these settings. Getting in first gives you an edge.
Your questions answered
Will the AI Max switch affect my account?+
It will if any of your Search campaigns run automatically created assets, broad match at campaign level or Dynamic Search Ads.
Is the Dynamic Search Ads upgrade off the table?+
No. The date has simply shifted to February 2027.
Are AI Max and Performance Max the same thing?+
No. AI Max remains within Search, retains your keywords and still reports the search terms that triggered your ads.
Can small businesses in Australia make AI Max work?+
Yes, provided tracking is accurate, negatives are solid and you test it properly before committing.
