Gary Vaynerchuk has a line he's been repeating on stage for years: "Content is king, but context is God." Yet most small businesses still post one video to Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, unchanged, then scratch their heads when it only takes off in one place.
Flip that around for a second. Somewhere on your phone there's a clip that worked. A barista dragging a rosetta through a flat white.
A bathroom in Baldivis goes from mouldy grout to gleaming tiles in thirty seconds. Strangers watched the whole thing, sent it to mates, and asked how much. That's the bit advertisers pay a fortune trying to fake, and you've already got it.
YouTube Demand Gen ads let you put that clip in front of people who have no idea you exist. Plenty of them, too: YouTube reached more than 20.1 million Australian adults in May 2025, about 96% of all online adults, according to Ipsos iris numbers reported by Mediaweek.
Here's how I'd pick the clips, patch them up for YouTube, and run a campaign without torching the budget by Friday.
What Are YouTube Demand Gen Ads, Exactly?
Short version? It's the Google Ads campaign for people who are scrolling, not searching. You build it once and Google can drop your videos and images into YouTube (pre-roll, the home feed, between Shorts), Discover, Gmail, even Google Maps. Video Action campaigns got retired this year and shoved in here too.
If Meta or TikTok ads are already part of your week, YouTube Demand Gen ads won't feel foreign. Same mood.
Somebody's half-watching on the couch, thumb twitching, ready to flick past. Your social clips were born for that exact moment.
And Google keeps tinkering. Since its September 2026 update, a 9:16 full-bleed image ad on Shorts sends people to your landing page in one tap rather than two. Tiny tweak. Still counts.
Why Your Social Videos Are Already Half the Job
Ever briefed a production company? Three weeks, a quote that makes your eyes water, and a coin toss on whether the finished spot lands.
When you repurpose social media videos, that coin's already been flipped. Your followers voted with their thumbs, and the comments told you what they cared about.
There's also the look of the thing. Shaky phone footage of an actual tradie in an actual backyard doesn't register as an ad. On Shorts, that's gold.
A good TikTok still isn't a finished ad, though. Needs a tune-up.
How to Pick Clips Worth Turning Into Ads
Most-liked isn't the same as best. Your mum likes all your posts. (Sorry, Mum.) Here's what I'd look for:
- People stuck around. Retention over likes, always. Thirty seconds of a stranger's attention is hard to come by.
- The comments are questions. "How much for a 3x4 deck?" "Do you come to Mandurah?" Those people are halfway to buying, which beats forty crying-laughing emojis.
- It's obvious what you sell. The office prank that went viral might be hilarious. If nobody watching can tell you're a plumber, though, it isn't video ad creative. It's just a funny video.
- It proves something. Before-and-afters. Unboxings. A customer's face at the reveal.
- It won't look silly in March. Built on this month's trending audio? It'll age like milk on a Perth dashboard.
Three to five clips is plenty for a first run. Enough for Google to compare; not so many that your budget's sliced into slivers.
Reworking a Social Clip So It Works on YouTube
This part takes an afternoon, maybe two. Way cheaper than a reshoot.
- Fix the opening. Instagram lets you warm up. YouTube doesn't. Lead with the payoff: the finished deck, the gasp, the disaster.
- Get your name on screen early. Logo in the corner, product in hand, whatever, as long as it's there before the five-second mark.
- Burn in captions. Loads of people watch on mute on the train, and that TikTok track you used? Probably not licensed for ads.
- Ask for something. Social posts just kind of... stop. Ads can't. Book a quote. Grab the deal. Ring us.
- Export a few versions. 15 and 30 seconds, each in vertical, square and horizontal.
| Placement | Best shape | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Shorts | Vertical 9:16 | Hook in the first second, captions on |
| In-feed and Home | Horizontal 16:9 or square | The thumbnail does the heavy lifting |
| In-stream | Horizontal 16:9 | Brand before the skip button appears |
| Discover and Gmail | Square or horizontal images | Pair video with still images |
If your thumbnails look a bit sad, our graphic design services team can mock up a few options.
Setting Up a Campaign That Actually Learns
Treat month one as a science experiment.
A good Demand Gen creative strategy is really about giving Google enough options to work out which video lands with which person, and one lonely clip doesn't give it much to chew on.
My go-to setup: one campaign, two ad groups. Best social clip in one. A completely different angle in the other, maybe a customer testimonial against a product demo. Load both with all three video shapes plus a handful of stills, because video and images together almost always beat video on its own.
Start warm (your customer list, people who've visited the site) and widen to lookalikes later. Then leave it alone for two or three weeks. Fiddling twice a week just sends the algorithm back to kindergarten.
One more thing. If the video shouts about a $99 aircon service, don't drop people on your homepage and make them hunt. Purpose-built landing pages for ads keep the promise intact from scroll to sale.
Things That Trip Up Australian Advertisers
I see the same slip-ups in YouTube advertising Australia accounts again and again:
- The TikTok watermark's still there. Nothing says "couldn't be bothered" louder.
- Copy that sounds American. "Shop the holiday sale" in November reads like Thanksgiving. Write the way your customers talk.
- Ads running when nobody's answering. If the phones are only staffed 9 to 5 AWST, why pay for clicks at 6am?
- Panic on day three. Early numbers look rubbish. That's normal.
- Same video for six months straight. People get sick of it. Rotate in fresh video ad creative somewhere around week six to eight.

Quick Pre-Launch Checklist
- Three to five proven social clips picked
- First two seconds recut to open on the hook
- Captions burned in, no platform watermarks
- Vertical, square and horizontal versions exported
- A few still images added alongside the video
- Conversion tracking tested on the landing page
More than two boxes empty? Don't hit publish yet.
Start With What's Already Working
No film crew needed. No five-figure budget either. Just the videos that already worked, an afternoon with an editing app, and the discipline to leave the campaign alone.
YouTube Demand Gen ads reward real, varied content, and odds are your camera roll's already sitting on the good stuff. Running low?

Questions People Ask Us
Can I just upload my Instagram Reels as YouTube Demand Gen ads?+
Sure. Ten minutes of editing makes a real difference though: ditch the watermark, sharpen the opening, add captions and an ask, then export square and horizontal cuts as well.
How much should a small business budget to start?+
There's no hard minimum for YouTube advertising Australia campaigns. A lot of small businesses I talk to test with $30 to $50 a day for a month, which gives YouTube Demand Gen ads enough data to chew on. Go much lower and you'll be waiting a long while for anything useful.
Is it okay to repurpose social media videos made by creators?+
Only with their say-so. If a creator shot it, check the agreement actually covers paid ads. Google added a creator partnership option inside Google Ads this year.
How do I know if my Demand Gen creative strategy is working?+
Forget views for a minute. Look at conversions, what each lead or sale costs you, and which cut is pulling its weight. Once one version's clearly winning, make more like it and quietly retire the rest.
